Racism, Prejudice, And Systemic Oppression - 1772 Words

Over a century after the emancipation of millions of slaves, and twenty-five years following the declaration that â€Å"separate is not equal,† the case Regents of University of California v. Bakke ruled in favor of affirmative action. Justice Harry Blackmun affirmed in this decision that â€Å"[i]n order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. There is no other way.† As one of the most liberal judges on the court at the time, Blackmun tended to rule favorably in regards to expanding the rights of women and minorities. In presenting this opinion, he explains that issues of race must be addressed and considered in order to fix racism, prejudice, and systemic oppression. In regards to affirmative action (among other positive†¦show more content†¦For Justice Blackmun and Cheryl Harris, this means implementing legislation that draws attention to race in the hope of spreading awareness and consideration. Both speak of affirmative action; supporting its function in both establishing opportunities for minorities that were previously denied to them and urging careful consideration of candidates by factors including race. As a result Justice Blackmun perceives this to entitle minorities to special considerations, providing an advantage that would help to close the equality gap between themselves and their white counterparts. Similarly, Harris perceives law as a force that pretends to disregard superficial factors such as race, but in practice discriminates against minorities and their communities. In her piece Whiteness as Property, she argues that despite belief otherwise, the United States law system had essentially no choice but to exclude Blacks and limit their rights. Created by individuals who perceived whiteness as a privilege endowing them with certain entitlements (including supremacy and citizenship), the law segregates those who are white from everyone else. This establishes an â€Å"exclusive club,† whose â€Å"membership [is] closely and grudgingly guarded† (Harris 283). Feminism A Feminist Perspective - 2541 Words

Throughout history, women have fought for equality in areas such as politics, religion, careers and many more. Specifically, women fight to be treated with respect and equality in criminal justice and law enforcement careers. Criminology in particular is one of the most male centered fields of study in social sciences. As a female who plans to one day hold a career in this field, this issue is very personal to me. In 1960, Canada and Britain began interest in the argument that women are ignored in criminology. After this, the second wave of feminism interest came mid-twentieth century. This wave led to renewed interest in female offenders. Feminism is a set of theories and strategies to make gender the central focus in social change. This will help in attempts to understand relationships, institutions and processes. To broadly summarize, feminism is the belief that women are inherently of equal worth to men. Many feminist views believe women suffer from oppression and discrimination due to living in a male dominated society. When a society is run by a majority of males, the laws and customs are more likely to be created in order to benefit their gender. The first wave of feminism initially began in the 1800’s when women began demanding the right to vote. The peak of this first wave was between the years 1870-1928. In 1920, the nineteenth amendment to the constitution was passed, finally granting women the right to vote. 33rd Sonnet - 1422 Words

In William Shakespeare’s 33rd Sonnet, the speaker remarks on the ultimate beauty of the sun and its continuous daily cycle. However, the sun is not completely unmarked as the occasional cloud shields the world from its glory. In Greek mythology, the sun was the ultimate ruler as legend says Helios would drive the sun everyday across the sky in his golden chariot. A similar myth is mirrored in Egyptian history as Ra, the sun god, was the ultimate ruler. The sun holds a vital place in the the human history of power and strength and is the keystone to all life. Although at first read, the speaker seems to be remarking on the sun’s eternal glory despite the occasional shielding cloud, in actuality, the speaker is drawing a parallel between his†¦show more content†¦Shakespeare cleverly uses punctuation to accentuate the continuous path of the sun as he uses commas and semicolons until the tone of the sonnet changes after line 8, however, he continues to use open end ed punctuation after the conflict of the sun’s covering is resolved to display that the sun’s path continues despite whatever comes in its way. The colon after the 13th line clearly continues the statement and acts as if to say the cycle of the sun continues just as the phrase will after the colon. The sun is still loved and revered despite the occasional disappearance. In the second quatrain, the mood of the sonnet shifts entirely as the sun is suddenly hidden behind clouds. Shakespeare uses grim, depressed imagery to articulate how the speaker feels about this change: â€Å"Anon permit the basest clouds to ride/With ugly rack on his celestial face/And from the forlorn world his visage hide,/Stealing unseen to west with this disgrace.† (5-8). The speaker is clearly perturbed by the sun’s pivot. The word â€Å"ugly† and â€Å"disgrace† conotes a personal disgust from the speaker as he disapproves the sun’s shift. These words also sugg est the speaker takes great personal offense to the sun’s actions. Comparing and Contrasting Free Essays

Compare and contrast the way the poets present a rustic activity? The two poems ‘Photograph of Haymaker 1890’ by Molly Holden and ‘Hay-making’ by Gillian Clarke portray rustic activity in a similar way. The poem ‘Photograph of Haymaker 1890’ consists of two stanzas and this could be linked to the fact that it is a reminiscing photo of a man who cuts hay. This shows the rustic activity due to the fact it is the poet possibly describing a relative of hers working. We will write a custom essay sample on Comparing and Contrasting or any similar topic only for you Order Now Whereas, the poem ‘Hay-making’ has three very short stanzas. We can link the short, fast flowing stanzas with the fact that the title seems synonymous with love making. The poet Molly Holden cleverly uses the imagery of life and death throughout her poem ‘Photograph of Haymaker’. An example being ‘to whet his scythe’ this conveys the message of death and an image of a grim reaper. Holden cleverly juxtaposes this with the phrase ‘white shirt lit by another summer’s sun’. Gillian Clarke also uses an intriguing juxtaposition, ‘these hot nights’. This juxtaposition shows a sultry image of natural passion. You could also link this to rustic activity if you imagine a worker possibly working in the night time. The tones of the two poems seem completely different from each other. Holden’s poem, ‘Photograph of Haymaker’ has a nostalgic tone ‘he pausing from his work†¦ trousers tied below the knee’. The phrases used give the connotation of the poet bringing back good memories. This is what photographs tend to do. Clarke uses enjambment as she does not use punctuations to break up the flow of her poem and this adds to the dreary tone. Towards the end of the poem we see more evidence of rustic activity. The poet Molly Holden uses enjambment throughout the last stanza, ‘sweet hay and gone some seventy years ago and yet they stand before me in the sun’. This enjambment gives the image of hay possibly falling down. We can link this to rustic activity if we create an image in our head of hay falling down in a country farm. Gillian Clarke’s poem has an interesting caesura before the word ‘Breathe’, this can be seen as a command possibly suggesting how the ritual of harvesting is metaphorically inspirational. Another important phrase which is strongly linked to rustic activity is, ‘in the scratch of the hay’. The ‘scratch’ of the hay creates a physical link between rural nature of a farm for instance and the act of human love making. We can also say that this is onomatopoeia. Justification of a Scheme of Work free essay sample

A scheme of work is the overall programme of study. It may last for example, one week, ten weeks, or two years. It is merely a breakdown of the whole programme into smaller chunks based on your frequency of your meetings with learners. (Wilson Practical Teaching 2008 p68) The selection and sequencing of topics reflect on the 6218 curriculum set by the awarding body, the curriculum is a Basic Construction Skills course built around various practical tasks for which there are unit credits attached to obtain the qualification. I first begin with easier tasks leading up to more advanced tasks as the course progresses. This theory is reflected in Blooms Taxonomy which is a classification of learning objectives within education(Appendix 1) for The Blooms Wheel which makes planning a more structured process. The topics are put together into a sequence which makes it easier to assess a learner’s ladder of learning through the course. We will write a custom essay sample on Justification of a Scheme of Work or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Progressive small steps aid the learner into not becoming too overwhelmed by the tasks up ahead. To begin my scheme of work I must first look at the curriculum I am teaching. Marsh (2006) traced curriculum origins to its Latin roots which means ‘race course’. Indeed in many ways the curriculum is very similar to a race where there are a series of obstacles that need to be achieved in order to gain a qualification. The importance of my scheme of work is to design it to make the teaching of my subject more manageable over a period of time. There is no set method for developing a scheme of work as people adapt it to their own way of teaching, but what must be agreed is the importance of accurate schemes to guide subject delivery within FE. Inclusive learning The SOW can also be seen as a planning tool, a way of marking course delivery by determining the prerequisites for moving on. The use of resources within the scheme of work must promote inclusive learning and a scheme may specify the material that should be covered in a theory class before a practical test. Inclusive teaching is a good way of teaching as it can benefit a whole class rather than individual learners. For example, when reviewing how to describe a diagram to a blind student, it might become apparent that there is a better way for me to present the information for all students involved. In making my teaching inclusive I reassess the material I use in my teaching and the way in which it is delivered and assessed. It may determine what resources are needed before a project can begin. The main resource when teaching brickwork is the quality of the materials used in the practical area and the learning environment where the learning takes place. In providing learners with a realistic building environment with working materials they will adapt to a up to date way of teaching within the practical area. Other resources come in the form of handouts, these are given to all learners but benefit visual learners the most. On top of the handouts given I regularly do group and individual demonstrations relating to the subject that is being covered in the session this allows for any learning differentiation taking place. Within a scheme of work differentiation must also be used as this is an approach to teaching that attempts to ensure that all the learners learn well despite their many differences. Having the ability to differentiate within teaching is a great attribute as â€Å"A teacher who understands what helps a learner learn will be a better teacher because they recognize differences and are prepared to alter the teaching to suit those differences†. Wilson Practical Teaching 2008 p10) Differentiation is not new, good teachers have always done it for decades. The world of education was very exercised by the forerunner of differentiation which was referred to as ‘mixed ability teaching’. It was soon realised it was not just ability that could be â€Å"mixed’’ and t hat teachers had to cope with a wide range of differences: learning style, motivation, age, prior learning and experience, gender, specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, and so on. Consequently the term ‘mixed ability’ has been replaced by the term: ‘differentiation’. Differentiation is shown within the scheme of work by using different methods of assessing learners regarding different learning styles. Assessing learners using differentiation methods must be done to ensure that equality is ensured. Physically assessing brickwork is the most common form of assessing which I undertake, this appeals to the kinesthetic learners as it is a hands on approach towards their work. Questions and answers are also used to ensure underpinning knowledge is being understood, this would appeal to the auditory learners on top of the physical assessment. To round all three off I use written feedback in the learner’s handbooks expressing positive feedback and also pointing out areas where they need development and improvement. These handbooks also include what we call a phase test. This is an end of year practical test which covers the hand skills part of their qualification. The paperwork is put together with the end of year exam paperwork to form the marking criteria for the qualification. These documents are recorded firstly by the programme manager of the course then the internal verifier and lastly the external verifier. Because SoW are important planning tools for guiding course delivery, they should be easily accessible to learners. Many colleges now make them available on the Intranet so that they can be accessed by staff and students thus placing all the resources in context Hertford Regional College has Moodle where the scheme of work is uploaded. Some colleges like Hertford Regional College make the templates available on the network, but it is good practice to make the completed schemes available as well as examples. A further development would be to provide links from items in the scheme to assessments. Using the integration of ICT and minimum core subjects within a scheme of work is crucial to a learner’s development both within the main structure of the course and the contributing factors which use numeracy and literacy. My students are required to calculate materials they need to complete their models i. e. bricks and mortar to the nearest meter squared (Appendix 2). They use simple math equations based on the measurements they are given within their drawing in their handbooks. (Appendix 3) These calculations are also put together with a method statement which described how the wall has been completed and how it complies with health and safety regulations. A risk assessment is also completed to identify risks which may be contributed and a method put in place to reduce these risks. This is word processed by the learner before they begin their practical task so they have a plan of how this task can be completed safely and within a time scale. This can be related to a scheme of work as it is taking an element of a subject and breaking it down into easier more manageable process. As always this learning must be supported at every effort possible to stage and the support comes from separate structured classes within the curriculum where the learners have dedicated sessions on ICT skills and numeracy sessions relating to the subject field. Within these sessions learners are offered support depending on the degrees of support needed. This can be group or individual one to one support to aid their learning of how important minimum core subjects are within their trade. The learner’s progress within these sessions is monitored by a learning support officer and documented on a regular basis in the learners journal, this information is shared with the members of the team at regular meetings. Dedicated theory sessions also take place on regular occurrences through the academic terms engaging learner’s numeracy and literacy in the measuring and technical drawing of various structures and site plans using scaled drawings. The learners are given the task of transferring the information from a drawing they are given and convert it into different scales using a scale rule and calculator. In conclusion a scheme of work is a document of the upmost importance in regards to tracking and having a schedule to work to. They allow the tutor to plan a lesson to tie in with other team members working on the curriculum so that learning can be inclusive, dynamic and up to date. Lesson plans can be devised from the scheme of work to enable planning of resources and facilities . Schemes of work also can contain a notes section where the tutor can update continuously how learning is progressing both individuals and as a whole group. These updates are important so the scheme of work can be used in the event of staff absence where a session is covered by another member of staff. This allows learning to continue without a major disruption occurring. My scheme of work is used as a working document to constantly update my learners progress and help improve my delivery of teaching in future sessions with any changes being positive.. â€Å"Any changes to course delivery should be incorporated within the schemes and learners should be informed of the changes as, â€Å"Neither a scheme of work nor the lesson plan is fixed. They should be considered as ‘work in progress’ and will alter in response to organizational and learner needs†. (Wilson Practical Teaching 2008 p68) Appendix 1: Blooms Wheel Appendix 4

The different expansions that the company has been undertaking are beneficial since they offer dependable future opportunities. The company provides convenience foods to the American population, thus being in a better position of mimicking the success of America’s food industry. There is also an increase in demand for private labeled products, thus increasing the company’s sales. The consumer demand is also growing; it is benchmarking other com panies together with the opportunity of diversity and changing consumer preferences for ethnic foods. The company also encounters some threats including the competition of price in the market, decreased demand for canned products, unfavorable regulations and a slowing economy dominated with high inflation likely to affect the price of foods. Finally, it is possible that consumers who are cost conscious are likely to shift their buying habits to less expensive foods. The company’s administrative system and performance strategies Indeed, Goya food Inc is a renowned corporation that has recorded tremendous growth since its inception due to its effective management. The food store has been administered under quality ideals and strategies that are performance oriented. The strategies have ensured proper policy formulation, allocation of resources and coordination of activities. The strategies have also promoted teamwork, marketing, customer segmentation and identification of viabl e distribution channels (Smith, 2007, p. 59). These elements have enabled the company to satisfy the needs of its customers who range from Africans, British, Hispania’s and Caribbean’s effectively. They have also ensured timely delivery of services and products to consumers. As noted, the company’s strengths that include teamwork, quality service delivery and proper planning has enabled it to cut a niche for itself in the competitive operating environment. In particular, teamwork has enabled the company to gain competitive advantage and record high standard of performance since the arrangement has promoted the establishment and adoption of innovative ideas of service delivery. It has facilitated the integration of more conventional operating techniques that are set with strong performance orientation based on creativity. This has also helped in advancing the performance level of the company financially. The company’s financial analysis and the factors tha t contributed to its financial stability It is imperative to note that, Goya Food Company has been recording an upward trend in terms of financial performance over the years. This is evident in all its business portfolios that have always been able to record significant improvement in sales and returns on investment. The business portfolios that focus in providing African food items, British, Caribbean and Hispania foodstuffs have been significant contributors to its sound financial capacity (Smith, 2007, p. 59). This is factual as recorded in the company’s financial statements and reports that show its yearly performance. The reports justify the company’s steady growth since 1981 when it reported an immense increase in asset base and cash inflows. In the year, the company’s financial income stood at $150million up from $115millio in the previous year. This showed a remarkable growth of more than $35million that can only be achieved in corporations that operate under clear policies and performance guidelines. This indicates that the company started to inculcate a culture of proper allocation and utilization of resources with an aim to maximize on proceeds or eliminate wastage in ancient days. As established, key product portfolios contributed significantly in the realization of the figure presented. Firstly, British food portfolio that focuses in providing foodstuffs such as rice, beans, sauces and canned meals accounted for 20% of the total growth that was realized. Variably, African and Hispanic portfolios that focus in providing African red-palm oil, Malta, mango paste, canned vegetables, meat soup, meat stew and cheese accounted for 60% of the total income. Caribbean portfolio that provides seasoning foodstuff such as spices, canned meat, cheese and herbs also accounted for 20% of the total income (Smith, 2007, p. 62). This statistical findings show how these portfolios and business units that have over 9300 clients including 1200 sale smen were instrumental in enhancing the company’s financial performance. Since then the company has continued to report positive performance levels where in 1993, its income capacity rose to $400million with a strong employee base of 2500 individuals. In 1995, the company’s performance rose steadily to $500millio. This was evident due to its expanded business units, product portfolios and quality of its products that attracted more customers including repeat purchasing. During the year, the company expanded its production chain and streamlined the distribution system as a performance strategy to boost sales of food items (Smith, 2007, p. 63).The strategy adopted translated into the growth where its business units also contributed significantly. Consequently, the company recorded a performance index of $750million in the year 2003. The performance index included $31million in profit alone after necessary deductions were done. This trend has continued up to date as the c ompany still reports positive growth financially and in physical asset. Currently, the company is seeking to expand its production center to enable it meet the needs of its growing customers. This has seen the company embark on developing or construction a modern manufacturing facility that holds the capacity of storing and producing large quantities of food items. It also seeks to expand its international presence by opening branches in various locations and nations to ease distribution of items. Variably, it seeks to build strong strategic alliances with credible institutions in diverse nations to expand its market share (Smith, 2007, p. 67). These initiatives will enable the company to grow with speed and achieve the highest level of competitiveness that will guarantee the realization of its objective of becoming a market leader. The company’s good performance and financial capacity is also depicted in its financial ratios. The ratios that include current ratio, liquidity, acid test, earnings per share and asset turnover ratios report positive growth over the years. The upward trend in terms of profitability that the company has been recording is attributable to various factors that range from administrative to logistical aspects. Firstly, the company has been operating under lean concept of administration. The administrative style that emphasizes on waste minimization and effective utilization of resources has enabled the company to achieve optimal gains. This is apparent since the concept has been fostering value addition by ensuring that all the requisite processing procedures of food items are adhered to effectively. This has ensured production of quality items that matches consumer needs and expectations thereby improving sales. Secondly, the company has had a strong supply and distribution chain or network. The competitive tool has enabled it to distribute its items to consumer’s real time and in a systematic manner that guarantees produ cts availability. The company has also been able to record exemplary profit margins since it understands the purchasing patterns of its customers effectively. This has been enabling sales department to plan and distribute products to areas where there is demand to reduce wastage of resources especially delivery cost. Fourthly, the company’s financial department has been able to plan, allocate and distribute resources to various departments appropriately. Its managers have been using priority based cost allocation concept that is widely recognized as a credible financial management concept (Smith, 2007, p. 69). It has been instrumental in promoting accountability in all business portfolios by ensuring that there are no cash wastages or misappropriations. This has been a key driver of the company’s performance since financial misappropriation has been impeding performance in most corporations (Smith, 2007, p. 69). Its current performance levels and future expansion plans Goya Foods Company has been performing well since it started. In 2010, the company’s revenue reached $810 million and 891 in 2011. However, the revenue of the company continues to increase because it has been introducing new products such as frozen bread pudding, Caribbean style rice mixes and salsas among others. The company has also introduced other distribution facilities in different parts of the state including Webster, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Additionally, the company focuses on its expansion enabling it to transfer its Seville manufacturing facility to Gillette on a 550, 000 square foot plant. Additionally, the company plans to set up new centers in Richmond, Virginia and Houston, Texas, which highly contributed to its successfulness. Notably, Goya Foods Company has been in a position to increase on its production and performance because of opening up dissimilar centers in varying regions within the state (Burrows, 2006, P. 112- 113). Challenges that the company faces and how it can reorganize to counter their effects Notably, the company’s performance is under threat due to the emerging environmental and structural complications. The complications require the company to re-organize its operating systems by adopting more conventional approaches of service delivery. This is essential in ensuring that it maintains its performance levels and customer satisfaction (Smith, 2007, p. 71). Indeed, the company faces cracks in its inventory control process for its key product lines such as the supply of beans. This may cut the supply flow of its major products in the near future if proper mitigating measures are not undertaken. The company has also failed to respond with speed to align the production of Mexican food items with its initial product portfolios it introduced in 1977. The company also faces substantive product management challenges that threaten to impede the introduction of its new line of production of soft drinks that it seeks to roll out. This is an issue since the initiative has elicited some resistance from key stakeholders who view the incorporation of the new product line as an improper diversionary venture. These challenges may present severe implications to the company’s performance levels if they are not addressed professionally. Therefore, the company’s management must re-organize the institutions operating strategies and plans. In particular, the management should restructure the processing system and create more processing centers to facilitate smooth manufacturing of soft drinks. They should also facilitate personnel training on issues and procedures that appertain to fruit production to enable them adjust amicably. This is essential in making staff members to be receptive to the idea and participate in its execution with at most diligence. Conclusion Indeed, Goya Foods Company has been performing well since it started its operations. It remains the largest family owned Hispanic Food Company in U.S, with six factories in America and fourteen distribution centers. The company has more than 400 vendors and deals with more than 1,600 Latin products. It has been able to record high performance levels due to its exemplary management and leadership. It has also been able to attain its high profitability status due to proper utilization of resources and effective cost management.
